Description
Metaphor Stories for Children offers a way of supporting children’s learning and personal development through the sharing of metaphor-based stories. The author, an experienced, London primary (5 to 11 yrs) teacher, provides original examples of age-graded stories specifically created to address and work through issues commonly experienced by young children. The stories, which are are graded according to recommended age-range, are intended to be read or retold by an adult in a shared-reading situation. They are accompanied by notes and suggestions for questions relating to the particular ideas and issues being explored via metaphor and analogy. The all-pervasive presence, function and power of metaphor and analogy in language and thought, both in the present and historically, are briefly discussed and explained. The reader is encouraged to identify particular issues relevant to their own children and is provided with an approach to writing their own stories in response.
