Description
Trophies for Artists is an ongoing body of work in which Julia Caston creates a trophy
signifying that the participating artist wins at art. In order to win, the participant must satisfy the following three criteria:
1) Be a self identified artist
2) Buy Julia Caston a cup of coffee/fancy coffee shop beverage
3) Talk to Julia Caston for at least 20 minutes.
The artist-recipient gets to keep the trophy. The resulting trophy-sculptures are based on the conversation with the artist-recipient. This project focuses on honoring artists and the work that they do. Rather than resembling traditional trophies, these are art objects which blur the boundaries of how a trophy can function.
In addition, the simple rules for winning at art are meant to democratize the idea of the artist, while poking fun at the idea of the trophy, which is normally reserved for athletics and other competitive categories.
