Description
Often called Asia«s largest slum, Dharavi is a vibrant community of approximately 700,000 people located in the heart of Mumbai, India«s commercial capital. The Urban Design Studio 2009 spent an intensive week working closely with the community in Dharavi, trying to understand the issues involved from the point of view of the residents as well as the entire city. The studio then conducted further research and developed possible development scenarios. Community leaders and activists from Dharavi as well as experts from New York came to the studio to provide feedback. The results of this work are presented in this publication with the hope of contributing to the dialogue about critical issues in informal settlements today.
