Description
We knew Don Long was at Kaneohe Bay on December 7, 1941, but we did not know how close he came to being killed by the Japanese attack and how he saved himself on that day. His PBY squadron VP-12,Ênicknamed the ÔBlack CatsÓ for their flat-black painted, twin-engine Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina amphibious aircraft, flew into enemy territory from Guadalcanal. Don also flew everything from an N2S biplane to a propeller-driven, four-engine, triple-tail Lockheed EC-121 Warning Stars to Grumman F-9 Cougar swept-wing jets during his Navy career. Don said at a recent Pearl Harbor Survivor meeting, ÒRetired in Õ62, and God has granted me the privilege of still being here with you. I rolled 95 last June, and things going pretty well. And just one very recent note, I was privileged to go to Hawaii for the 75th Anniversary with the Pearl Harbor Survivors. It was a most, most memorable experience.Ó Pearl Harbor Survivor, US Navy WWII Veteran, Commander Don Long is truly one of the examples of the ÒGreatest GenerationÓ.
