Description
A large deposit of polymetallic nodules is located in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) of the northern central Pacific Ocean. Despite the nodules being located at great depths (4 000 to 6 000 m), they were explored with considerable success between the mid-1960s to the present day using a variety of increasingly sophisticated deep-sea technologies. In parallel with technological development administration of the Area was developed through rigorous drafting and implementation of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, associated implementing regulations and establishment of an oversight body called the International Seabed Authority.
