From 1932-1947 George Pal (yes, the George Pal of WAR OF THE WORLDS and DESTINATION MOON fame) produced PUPPETOONS, a series of animated shorts using a Òreplacement animationÓ technique. Instead of moving the puppets a little and snapping the next frame, the PUPPETOONS were replaced with another puppet for the following frame, a different position and expression. This meant that each short required thousands is models to get the desired effect. His characters were popular, memorable and controversial – – some are considered socially unacceptable today Ð but they were not created today. PUPPETOONS likely would have continued for a long time, but Pal turned his attentions to feature films.
Over 18 issues from 1945-1947 (and one more issue in 1950) THE PUPPETOONS came to the comics. Unrestrained by the limitations of animation, the colorful characters come even more to life! It has been over 60 years since these books have seen the light of day Ð Thank God for Gwandanaland and Midcentury !
