It is indeed unfortunate that more of this mysterious, beautiful and powerful language did not survive until today. Though its speakers were never historically known to number more than a few hundred, it evidently bore an uncanny resemblance to Proto-Northern-Iroquoian, once spoken by ancestors of all the Iroquois tribes. Strangely too, the Nottoway forms seem much more readily memorable than those in many other languages – even including those of its closest known relatives.
