Description
I expect these early patents to be of interest to anyone with knowledge of some of the early Rockford, Illinois innovators and industries such as- Barber-Colman Co, W F & John Barnes, William Worth Burson, Howard D , Colman, Emerson Mfg Co, Ingersoll Milling Machine Co, William Person, Lewis E, Waterman.
Only the first page of a patent is shown. There are usually additional pages of illustrations, description and claims. A few of them are design patents claiming a novel appearance to the item.
I especially like seeing the farm equipment patents since most of my career was spent in that type of engineering for the J I Case Company of Racine, Wisconsin.
One in particular is 1906 patent number 832938; Scraper; Waterman, Lewis E; Assignor to Emerson Mfg Co; Rockford; October 9, 1906. It is similar to a planter disk opener that I worked on in 1950’s. At that time the office where I worked was located in a former Emerson-Brantingham building. Lewis E Waterman seems to be a prolific inventor of farm equipment for Emerson Mfg Co. In an eleven-year span, he was credited with 43 patents, all assigned to Emerson. I have been unable to find much of his biographical information. If you are aware of any additional information, please let me know.
Rockford City Directories have Lewis E Waterman employed by Emerson Mfg for- 1902, 1903, 1905, 1907, 1908 and, 1909 as an inventor.
