Description
Schola Prima I Grammar and Composition is a fun and gentle introduction to grammar and composition. Grammar lessons are on punctuation and parts of speech, and composition lessons are on Units 1-4 of IEWÕs Teaching Writing: Structure and Style with an introduction to four of IEWÕs stylistic elements or Òdress-ups.Ó
(IEW training is required for all parents and mentors.)
The same skills in grammar and composition will be taught each year, but the stories and source texts will vary as they correlate to the Aquinas Learning cycle themes. We hope this will engage the studentsÕ interest, deepen their understanding, and allow them to make the connections so important to an education in the liberal arts.
Over the three years of Schola Prima I, students who complete this course will build a strong foundation in grammar and composition in preparation for Schola Prima II. They will be able to
1. define and provide simple examples for nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and their corresponding dress-ups;
2. identify the four parts of the story sequence chart;
3. dictate or write an outline
narrating a story or summarizing a reference; and
4. narrate a story or reference from an outline orally or in writing.
