The task of identifying musical ideas through informed and deliberative listening is paramount in the theoretical development of the musicality and intuition of a student.

This workbook gives a simple format for the assignment of listening homework to studio music students to supplement their theoretical, technical, and literary development.

By giving students a simple and achievable listening worksheet to fill out on a weekly basis, the studio teacher will finally have an effective and relatively unobtrusive means to build their students’ musical ear and points of reference.

The student who is asked to find meaningful passages, to identify melodies and motives, … will inevitably carry these musical understandings into their own performances. They will develop mature expressive arcs, firm opinions on climax and high points, an informed ear … from their experience using these exercises to return to the audiences’ perspective.
