Commuter Faces: Train Photography Series

….most of these sketches were made on NYC, Seoul, and some other world subways thrown in. …some, i think/remember, were made at cafes and restaurants. I want to thank the people in public that I made a sneak peek at. Most of these had 60 seconds to completion. …one look, two stops. I remember only one attractive woman, who I thought was unaware of the sketching, standing up before exiting the door and saying: Ônow show it to me.Ó

I am of the brotherhood/sisterhood of subway sketchers. Those who donÕt like pecking at pads or phones or playing absurd game apps through this wonderful liminal zone of the subway transit. New Yorkers also read more than any other world riders I have seen. The subway trip has become as infantilized as the rest of our lives…so i use these for inspiration…or capture the new shapes: the structures of their faces inspired the structure of my ceramics, lights, architecture, scenography, sculpture….or the shape of my time in transit….
